COMMUTERS feared a pensioner had died in a crash which caused traffic bedlam.
The 76-year-old man suffered a broken pelvis in the A82 accident, which created a four mile tailback and crippled the area's road network.
Dumbarton town centre, Bellsmyre, Balloch and Renton all ground to a halt on Thursday morning as jams spread throughout the area.
The traffic chaos started when the pensioner's Audi turned down Milton Brae, Milton, onto the A82, colliding with a Clio travelling towards Clydebank at 8.20am.
Emergency crews fought through queues of cars to ferry the man to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley. The driver and passengers of the Clio are understood to have escaped without injury.
Now calls have been made for a new road to be built to take pressure away from the vital link.
Milton councillor George Black told the Reporter: `The A82 is no longer fit for purpose. It can no longer carry the volume of traffic which uses it every day. We need to look at building a bypass.`
