TRAIN CRASH HERO COMES HOME
By David Clegg
Crash driver Iain is re-united with friends and family
THE brave train driver who struggled to avert disaster in the Cumbrian rail crash has returned home — to a hero's welcome.
Iain Black arrived back in Dumbarton on Wednesday after spending almost a month in the Royal Preston Hospital being treated for injuries sustained in the crash.
Family and friends gathered round the Burgh hero at a special party on Sunday to mark his safe return.
Speaking to the Reporter from his Dumbarton East home, Iain said: `The staff at the hospital in Preston were absolutely fantastic to me, but I’m glad to be home.
`It’s been great to see everyone.”
The Dumbarton dad is now recovering from the neck and knee injuries he suffered in the crash, and says he has been inundated with messages of support.
He added:`Everybody has been waving and saying hello because they all know me now. It has been a fantastic level of support.
“I would like to thank everyone from Dumbarton who has wished me well. It has been much appreciated.”
Iain was driving the London to Glasgow express through a remote part of Cumbria on February 23 when the train derailed at 95mph.
One woman died and 22 other people were injured in the crash. An initial inquiry blamed a faulty set of points for the accident.
