A VICIOUS baseball bat thug who left a young mum unable to cradle her baby son for four months has been caged.

Victim Sharon Houston, 28, suffered two broken arms, a broken leg, a broken foot, a smashed jaw, broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

She spent three weeks in hospital, three months in plaster and had to have metal plates inserted in her jaw and in her left arm.

Brutal Mark Ferguson, 31, of Dumbarton, was found guilty of attempting to murder the young mum at the High Court in Glasgow last month.

Appearing for sentencing on Friday, judge Lord Carloway jailed Ferguson, of Muir Road, Bellsmyre, for nine years and 10 months.

He also also ordered him to be supervised for five years after his release.

He told him: `This was a brutal and cowardly attack carried out on a woman at her own front door, the reasons for which were not made clear to me.`

In the dock with Ferguson was Kevin O'Neill, 38, from Clydebank, who was jailed for four years for assaulting Sharon to her severe injury, permanent disfigurement and permanent impairment.

In evidence, the mum told the court that she was unable to cuddle or hold her younger son, who was just four and a half months old when the attack took place, until he was nine months old.

The assault took place outside Ms Houston's then home in Braes Avenue, Clydebank, on June 29, 2005.
