A MAN had unprotected sex with an underage girl he met on the internet.

George Spiers, 20, invited the the girl to his Vale home and slept with her `on several occasions`.

The girl was only 14 at the time of the offence and she had told Spiers she was just about to turn 16.

The offence came to light when the girl's mother reported her missing and the police traced her to Spiers' address, Dumbarton Sheriff Court heard last week.

Lynne Jamieson, prosecuting, told the court the victim's mother contacted the police when her daughter failed to come home one night.

She added: `She had last seen her daughter at eight o'clock in the evening the previous day. She had told her mother it was her intention to travel to the Dumbarton area to spend time with friends and that she would return that evening.

`The mother believed [her daughter] might have been with a male who she had met while chatting on an internet chat room. She gave the details to the police who traced the accused.

`When the police spoke to the girl to ascertain where she had been since leaving her home on the Friday, the girl said she had been involved in a sexual relationship with the accused.`

Spiers later confessed to having `unprotected sex` with the girl on several occasions between January 1 and April 7 this year.

Sheriff Desmond Leslie said the incident was one Spiers would `no doubt feel regret about`.

He added: `This was a straight forward meeting, there wasn't any suggestion she was being groomed in any shape or form by you.`

He placed Spiers, of 5B Back Street, Renton, on probation for nine months.
