A GARDENER got the fright of his life — when he dug up a hand grenade.

The explosive device was uncovered at Geils Avenue as the home owner was working at his garden.

Neighbours looked on in shock as police, army and the bomb squad cordoned off the address to examine the device.

Josie Stevenson, a resident of Geils Avenue, told the Reporter: `We were in the house on Sunday evening when we saw police in the street. They had been there quite some time and we were beginning to wonder what was happening when we saw the bomb disposal unit arrive — that was when we realised that it was a bit more serious.

`Someone went out to speak to the police and were advised that a hand grenade had been found in the garden. The owner had been clearing his back garden when he found the device. They said the bomb disposal team were preparing to remove the device to carry out a controlled explosion. We were told we wouldn’t need to be evacuated.`

The bomb squad took to the grenade to a `safe location` east of Dumbarton Castle and carried out a controlled explosion.

The incident marks the second time in a fortnight that an unexploded bomb has been found in the Burgh.

Pupils had to be evacuated from St Peter’s Primary after a World War 2 shell was discovered on a nearby building site.

The live bomb was found on June 5 during the ongoing work at the new Whitegate housing development in Bellsmyre.
