PUBLIC OVERWHELM HOSPITAL MEETING

MORE than 200 people were ‘locked out’ of a public meeting on the future of the Vale of Leven Hospital.

At least 500 people packed Bonhill Parish Church last Tuesday, with others having to stand outside and in hallways.

In an `overwhelming` response to a call from campaigners, people sat where they could.

The meeting was organised after NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde (GGC) announced their intention to cut medical services and transfer them to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.

GGC were accused of being `deceitful and duplicitious` by campaigners.

Chairing the meeting in his own church, Rev Ian Miller said he tried to accommodate as many people as possible.

A delighted Jackie Pollock, secretary of the United Campaign Group (UGC), who organised the meeting, said: `I am overwhelmed by the number of people who turned out. I never expected so many.`

The meeting was the first of two organised by UCG with a declaration that this was `the final battle` in the fight to save services.

Rev Miller said: `Anyone who has been there realises what a great asset [the hospital] is.`

The next UCG public meeting is being held tomorrow (Wednesday June 20) at 7.30pm in Riverside Church, Dumbarton.
