'THE VALE IS SAVED'
By Breea McGinness
THE Vale of Leven Hospital’s services have been saved — that is the general consensus of feeling circulating this week.
Professor Angus Mackay’s independent review of the Vale’s services has landed on the Health minister Nicola Sturgeon’s desk — and the result is said to be positive according to sources close to Government.
The findings of the report are expected to be revealed to the public today (Tuesday) and it is already rumoured that Ms Sturgeon’s response will be in favour of retaining Anaesthetics, Unscheduled Medical Care and the birthing facilities at the Community Midwife Unit.
There may still be doubts over mental health facilities.
It is expected that Ms Sturgeon, the cabinet secretary for Health, will be confirming the details today with the findings being made available to the public online.
Iain Robertson (SNP), leader of West Dunbartonshire Council, said: “I have every confidence that the SNP will make the right decision when it comes to the Vale services.
“I’m sure they have listened to everyone and taken their views into consideration.”
Campaigners, who have been working for months to try and secure the services at the Vale, are anxiously waiting for the verdict but were remarkably upbeat.
Jackie Pollock, of the United Campaign Group, said: “If we do win this it will be a people-power victory.
“I am keeping my fingers crossed for good news.
“We feel the panel have listened to us and we have always been sure that Nicola Sturgeon won’t give her decision lightly.”
Ms Sturgeon commissioned an independent review after the NHS Greater Glasgow (GGC) announced a series of cuts earlier this year.
Those who went to the meeting attended by Professor Angus Mackay in Dumbarton’s Burgh Hall will be notified of the findings of the report by mail.
Jim Moohan, chairman of Hospitalwatch, said: “It would really be an early Christmas present if the findings of the report were positive.
“It would mean that all the time and effort the community has put in to trying to save the Vale would be worth it, for patients, their families and friends.
“After waiting and working for this for so long, we would all be delighted to get results.”
