AWARDS: Melissa with the Napier and Community Cups

A BROWNIE’S first aid training proved to be invaluable after her gran fell down stairs, breaking her leg.

Bright Melissa Bain, 8, went to the aid of her gran, Patricia, in her home in Nobleston, Bonhill, before raising the alarm.

The actions of the 2nd Vale of Leven Brownie member won her two prestigious awards.

The youngster was “chuffed to bits” when she received the Napier Cup for having the presence of mind in dealing with the situation at the recent annual review of the Rainbows, Brownies and Guides.

And after hearing about Melissa actions, her school, Christie Park Primary in Alexandria, awarded her their Community Cup.

Melissa’s mum Kim, of Balloch, said: “Melissa was the only other person in the house at the time and coped quite well when her gran fell down the stairs.

“Her gran tripped over a pair of shoes and only fell one or two steps, but she broke one leg in two places and sprained the other.

“The way she fell meant that she was unable to move so if Melissa had not been there then her gran could have been lying there for about four or five hours until her grandfather came home.

“Melissa got a cushion for her gran to put under her legs and made sure she was comfortable then she phoned her dad, Ian, before going to a neighbour for help.”

Mrs Bain added: “Melissa has always been a helper and had been working for her First Aid badge, her gran has fully recovered now.”
