MEET THE CHRISTMAS CREW
By Stacey Mullen
GREEN WATCH: (l-r) Roy Meekson, Bob McGarry, Paul Halliday, Colin McPhee and Paul Docherty
WHILE you are tucking into your turkey on Christmas Day spare a thought for those who are working — like the Green watch firefighters.
Well who else can deal with all the burning turkeys or that big man in the red suit who manages every year to get stuck down the chimney?
Fortunately for Green Watch — which will work from 8am to 6pm — those type of incidents are not as common as you might think, but it is good to know they are there just in case.
Watch Commander Colin McPhee said: “Christmas Day usually is very quiet and we don’t have any turkey’s going on fire or anything like that.
“I think people are just getting more educated about the causes of fires and this means that overall accidents with fairy lights or decorations are minimum.”
The Green watch team, which also includes Firefighters Paul Halliday, Paul Docherty, Roy Meekson and Crew Commander Bob McGarry, will still celebrate the day with their families but they are especially looking forward to receiving a festive dinner with all the trimmings from their bosses.
It is tradition in the fire service that the higher ranking officers, in this case Colin, rustle up a Christmas meal for their team, so let’s hope he can cook.
Paul Docherty, who has two sons — Jamie, 25 and Sean, 21 — said: “Just because you are working Christmas Day doesn’t mean that you can’t have a good day at work. We will do normal things like watch a movie or listen to the Queen’s Speech and then I will go home and spend the evening with my family.”
Although most of the crew will be working on Christmas Day, they still hope to spread cheer to the community — and their message is, “enjoy yourself but be careful”.
