WOOD CHIPPINGS TO HEAT PARK HQ
By Andrew Weston
ECO-FRIENDLY: The wood burner
THE new National Park HQ is set to become a showpiece of sustainable building by burning wood chippings for heat.
Chips from within a 30-mile radius of the Balloch HQ will be burned in a special boiler (pictured).
The process has been highly praised for its lack of greenhouse gas emissions and, when the building is opened in May, it will provide an example for other eco-friendly designs.
Our Power, based in Cairndow, Argyll, will supply the wood chips and is owned by the community charity Here We Are.
Speaking about the new partnership, Carron Tobin, director of Strategy and Programmes at the Park said: “There are many challenges when building a highly sustainable building and the National Park HQ is no exception.
“Some of the challenges include the procurement of sustainable materials so we are delighted to welcome Our Power on board.
“What makes this community led business so special is that they share our vision for the HQ and are shining examples of environmental enterprise in Scotland.
“By using Our Power, we have demonstrated that it is possible to source materials locally and support communities in and around the National Park whilst adding to the Scottish Government’s Greener Scotland agenda.”
