COUNCILLOR FACES RAP IN WORKERS' PAY ROW
By Andrew Gibson
AN SNP councillor is in trouble for criticising council officers over a highly sensitive pay deal which affects thousands of West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) workers.
And furious David McMillian, WDC chief executive, has now reported Councillor Jonathan McColl to the Standards Commission.
Currently a huge proportion of 2,000 workers are voting in union ballots on the new Single Status pay deal which, under Government obligation, has been created by WDC to create fair pay.
Last week the Reporter was handed a letter written by Councillor McColl, who represents Leven Ward, in which he slams the way the process has been handled and says he hopes councillors reject the deal.
As a former care worker for WDC, McColl could receive back pay upon the implementation of the Single Status agreement.
The letter reads: “I use the word ‘agreement’ in irony as I am yet to meet anyone other than the officers responsible for the current state of play that agrees with it.
“I do not have the same inside information as other elected members have, as I am required to leave meetings when the Single Status is being discussed, but from what my own GMB Union rep tells me, the process has been flawed from the outset.
“What I cannot understand is how the evaluation team seem to have mismatched so many jobs.”
After the contents of the letter were revealed to council bosses, Mr McMillan, condemned Councillor McColl’s comments and, in particular, his criticisms of WDC officers.
Councillor McColl, who voted against the new pay deal in a GMB union ballot, declined to comment.
