AN 11-YEAR-OLD eco-warrior who campaigned against a balloon release at her school has won her battle with West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC).

Environmentally conscious Summer Logan of Jamestown Primary was unhappy when 1,000 helium balloons were released as part of the school’s 145th birthday celebrations.

Summer, who was concerned the balloons could be harmful to wildlife, had the backing of campaign organisation Keep Scotland Beautiful.

However with the event already organised and paid for, the concerned pupil was too late to stop the release.

But now Terry Lanagan, WDC Educational Services executive director (pictured below), has written to Summer promising there will be no more balloon releases across the area.

A delighted Summer, of Levenbank Terrace, who could not face school on the day of the celebration, says she is happy with the pledge.

She added: “I think its great, I just wish it had happened sooner.

“I am so happy that I kept up with my protest even though at times — especially when I was upset — it was hard.

“I am going to keep going with my campaigns and hopefully make Scotland tidier and keep Scotland’s animals safe.”

Summer’s mother Christina said: “I think she has been absolutely fantastic.

“She has been worried she would get in trouble from her teachers and I told her ‘you can’t get in trouble for saying what you feel’.”

She added: “I’m extremely proud of her.”
