PHENOMENAL NIGHT IN FLORENCE
By Mike Farrell
DREAMS do not often come true in football — but for one Burgh man they have.
Lucky John Davidson won the trip of a lifetime to see his team Rangers win in nail-biting European semi-final clash.
The 51-year-old from Bellsmyre and his daughter Heather, 24, went on an all-expenses paid trip to see his beloved Gers take on Fiorentina in Florence, after winning a phone-in competition.
The trip to the UEFA cup semi on Thursday was an unbelievable experience for John and Heather, as Rangers won 4-2 on penalties after a nerve-wracking 120 minutes.
John told the Reporter: “It was absolutely tremendous, words cannot explain it."
The two lucky fans flew out to Italy on Wednesday morning with the Rangers squad, stayed two nights in a luxury hotel, watched the game in hospitality seats and accompanied their heroes on the flight home.
When asked about the match itself John said: “I’m normally a bit of an armchair fan — I don’t get the chance to go to the matches a lot, so I was completely over the moon about it.
“It’s the sort of thing you dream about as a kid, I was absolutely gob-smacked to find that I’d won.”
The kitchen fitter had a lot of interest for his second ticket when he won.
Rangers will meet Zenit St Petersburg in the final at the City of Manchester Stadium on May 14.
The competition was run by STV while covering Rangers’ home leg of the Fiorentina tie.
