WE DEMAND OUR SUPPLY
By Mike Farrell
Rev Dane Sherrard of Luss Parish Church
POWER cuts are plaguing the everyday life of a community — and now fed up residents are calling for help.
The village has been hit with the energy blackouts — some lasting up to nine hours — nearly 20 times since last July, harming business and leaving elderly residents without heating.
The community of around 240 homes cannot put up with the erratic energy supply any longer, having suffered three blackouts lasting between six to nine hours in the past month.
Luss runs almost entirely on electricity supplied by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) and Scottish Power as there is no mains gas supply to the area.
Both power companies have apologised for the 18 energy cuts, but people in the area are demanding that it just gets fixed.
Reverend Dane Sherrard, 62, of Luss Parish Church has had to buy his own generators in case the power goes when he is conducting one of the many weddings that take place at the church.
People come from far and wide to get hitched in the picturesque chapel, which has its own state-of-the-art multimedia suite to record their special day.
Many of those living in the village are elderly, and with the majority of homes running on electricity without gas or coal fires, they are often left in the dark without heating during the cuts.
Luss Community Council has also written to First Minister Alex Salmond asking him to visit the wee community, to see the havoc and annoyance the blackouts are causing.
Reverend Sherrard has tried to help the residents by setting up a room in the parish house with a gas fire for those to visit when the power cuts off.
