WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH
By Andrew Gibson
The mounds of dirt in front of Dumbarton Castle
“ILLEGAL DUMPING” of dirt, rock and metal in front of Dumbarton Castle has been labelled a “disgrace”.
Claims have been made by concerned Dumbarton residents that a Burgh businessman is breaching planning rules by dumping on land beside the River Leven.
At last week’s full meeting of West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC), concerned resident Jimmy Gillespie spoke to councillors about the dumping next to the Sandpoint Marina, Dumbarton.
He said: “I would like to ask WDC why it has continually ignored the public’s complaints against Sandpoint Marina, who continually are in breach of planning regulations laid down by the council 12 years ago?
“There are breaches of planning which on numerous occasions the council have never taken up.
“Everybody and anybody are dumping down there and we are going to be left to pick up the tab.
“They are throwing 100,000 tonnes of rubbish in front of Dumbarton Castle and it is a disgrace.”
Mr Gillespie said council letters he had found dating from 2000, show a planning officer requesting marina owner Pat Doherty to build rock armour on the site to stop inert materials from getting into the river.
Jimmy claims that no protective armour has ever been built.
Jim Cormack, Dumbarton East Community Council member has backed Jimmy’s claims.
He said:“How can WDC be serious about tourism when they are allowing a massive blot like that right in front of the castle.”
Councillor William Hendrie, Housing, Environment and Economic spokesperson vowed to investigate the matter.
The council and Mr Doherty were unavailable for comment at the time of the Reporter going to print.
