A SERIAL driving offender who mowed down a Norwegian football fan as he tried to cross a road has been jailed for three years.

Rosshead man Javid Nazir struck dad-of-three Jan Kalleklev while travelling in his powerful 4x4 jeep.

The victim was sent hurtling through the air and later died to his serious injuries.

Handyman Nazir was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving after a trial last month at the High Court in Glasgow.

It emerged on Tuesday that the 39-year-old has previous convictions for both careless and dangerous driving.

Judge Lord Turnbull told Nazir that custody was appropriate, but that no sentence could fully recognise the loss of Mr Kalleklev.

The judge added: “Your failure to take appropriate care lead to the death of an entirely innocent man visiting this country.

“Your history of road traffic convictions troubles me and despite the efforts of the courts, it is obvious that you failed to learn a lesson.”

Nazir, of Hogarth Court, Alexandria, was also banned from driving for the next five years.

The tragic accident happened near the city’s Corus Hotel in Argyle Street around midnight on April 2 2006.

Mr Kalleklev had earlier travelled over from his hometown in Bergen to attend Norway’s friendly against Scotland at Hampden.

The court was told that Nazir could have been driving as fast as 55mph in the 30mph zone.

He said he had briefly checked his rear-view when he suddenly became aware of Mr Kalleklev in front of him and that he could not stop until it was “too late”.

Douglas Thompson, defending, said Nazir fully accepted responsibility for the death of Mr Kalleklev and was deeply sorry for what happened.
