Pint-sized youth had fierce-looking cleaver
By Court Reporter
A PINT-SIZED teenager caused alarm when he was spotted at a beauty spot holding a meat cleaver.
A worried onlooker, who saw Daniel Mullin with the fierce-looking item in a public park, informed a traffic warden who alerted the cops.
When they arrived around 2pm, Mullin was seen to throw the blade over a fence, into a children’s play area, and tried to flea, but was eventually caught, Dumbarton Sheriff Court heard last week.
The 16-year-old told police he had found the butchering blade and was intending to show it off to his pals then take it home to give it to his gran.
Sheriff Simon Fraser said he was amazed at the number of weapons that could be found lying around the Vale.
Mullin’s lawyer, Kenny Clark, said his client presented as being “immature both physically and mentally”.
But the lawyer said that the teen’s offence could be distinguished from the normal knife crime that goes through the courts.
He said: “I think this frank explanation can be believed. He comes from a difficult family background but has no previous convictions or involvement with the Childrens Panel.
“All things considered, this is a young man who has been doing his best to be a worthwhile member of society.”
Mullin admitted possessing a meat cleaver at Moss O’ Balloch Park, Balloch, on April 14 this year.
Sheriff Fraser deferred sentence on Mullin, of 17 Lynn Walk, Balloch, for three months but warned him if he did not stay out of trouble he would be going straight to jail.
