Breaking news - Teen death inquiry latest
By Staff Reporter
AN INQUIRY into the death of a teenager in police custody has heard of the “volatile” relationship between him and one of the men he shared a cell with.
As the Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) into the fatal drug overdose of 19-year-old Chad Hyslop entered its second week the hearing was told how Chad had been involved in a heated row with Robert Currie, 19 — an incident that had led to his arrest.
The police inspector who sanctioned the placing of Chad and Currie in the same cell — despite a falling out — was quizzed over this decision.
Inspector Ian Wallace, 44, said he allowed this because he believed the two teenagers were friends.
Mr Murphy, the lawyer representing Chad’s grieving mum, Margaret Hyslop, read part of a statement Chad gave following his arrest which told how he had threatened to put Currie through a window because Currie had challenged him with a samurai sword.
A struggle between the two followed with a window at the benefits office in Meadowbank Street, Dumbarton, being broken.
This set of events in the lead up to their arrest was put to Inspector Wallace who said it was “a bit concerning” but he would have “still have been comfortable” putting Chad and Currie in a cell together because of what he knew of their friendship.
Earlier in the week Chad’s other cell-mate Robert Hastings, 34, was questioned further about where the heroin that killed Chad had come from.
Hastings insisted on Tuesday, that he could not remember what happened in the cell which he, Chad and Currie were moved into on the Saturday night.
Harrowing evidence of how teenager Chad was found on the morning of his death was also revealed at the inquiry on Wednesday.
Inspector Andrew Hutton, 39, whose first day on the job as duty officer was the day Chad died, spoke about the grim discovery he made around 8.30am on Sunday February 25 last year.
The FAI in front of Sheriff Simon Pender at Dumbarton’s Municipal Buildings continues tomorrow (Friday) with further police witnesses due to appear.
