Machete? It's a potato knife

AN ex-con — trying to be a “family man” — was caught with a 10in “machete” down his trousers.

When searched by cops and the dangerous item was discovered, Martin Walker told them ‘it’s my potato knife’.”

Police on routine patrol had spotted Walker and noticed he seemed agitated and quickly tried to get into a nearby flat.

Suspicious of how he was acting, the cops quickly turned their car around, Dumbarton Sheriff Court heard.

They shouted on Walker to stop and when they got to him asked if he would consent to a search, Henna Chaudry, fiscal depute, said.

When they felt his waste band they suspected he was concealing a weapon and cautioned him.

Lawyer Kirsty McRae said that when the 31-year-old was not in prison he was living at Napier Crescent, Brucehill.

She told the court that despite his long record, this was his first conviction in Scotland. He moved north of the border from England around 18 months ago, two years after his release from jail.

She said: “When he was released he decided to move to Scotland as he has some family here, but more importantly he has a seven-year-old son here.

“He wanted to become a family man and spend more time with his son.”

She said that he “fully accepts” he should not have had the blade.

Walker has been locked-up since being arrested that night.

Walker admitted possessing the machete-type knife in Westcliff Drive on April 30 this year.

Sheriff George Jamieson said that a custodial sentence was “inevitable” but he would give him a discount for his early plea.

He jailed Walker for a year and backdated the sentence to May 1.
