A NOTORIOUS female petty criminal tried to escape the clutches of the law after managing to break free from her handcuffs.

Police had been called out after a disturbance in the street at around 11.40pm on the night in question.

Residents, who were investigating the commotion, found Stephanie Barr shouting and swearing at them.

The 18-year-old then ran into the road and kicked two cars, denting them both, for apparently no reason, Dumbarton Sheriff Court heard on Thursday.

Before cops were able to arrive at the scene Barr started challenging the residents to a fight.

When officers did arrive Barr was arrested for breaching the peace.

But as the police went to try to deal with the large crowd that had gathered, Barr managed to slip off the cuffs and tried to run off.

Roddy Boag, defending, said: “Having dealt with Miss Barr for almost all of her adult life it appears that every time there’s a glint of light then the clouds start to come over again.

“Being stopped by the police and being spoken to has been part of her daily life for most of the time that she’s out.

“But she’s accepted to start a course in travel and tourism at college and appears to have matured somewhat.

“She’s a perfectly reasonable person when you meet her normally but the demons get a hold of her when she has a drink.”

Barr pled guilty to damaging two cars, breaching the peace by challenging others to a fight and resisting arrest by releasing her handcuffs and escaping from a police car on May 30 2008 at Colquhoun Drive, Rosshead, Alexandria.

Sheriff Gerard Sinclair, sentencing, said: “For someone so young you have got a dreadful record and a number of attempts have been made to assist you with your difficult upbringing.”

Barr, c/o Blue Triangle, 45 Braehead, Alexandria, was jailed for two months backdated to June 2.
