Gunman fear at school

MASS panic ripped through a community as rumours spread that a gunman was near a primary school.
Armed cops arrived on the scene after reports that an assault involving a firearm had occurred.
Fear spread to a nearby primary school where pupils were prevented from leaving the premises on their own.
A mother, who was at St Peter’s primary school, said: “The rumours were a man was going about in a car with a shotgun pinpointing someone.
“There were police around with guns out, they had helmets and bullet proof vests on. There were parents rushing about to get their children because nobody knew what was going on and when they heard somebody was going about with a shotgun that is when panic set in. People started thinking about Dunblane.”
The drama unfolded in Bellsmyre, Dumbarton, near to St Peter’s Primary school on Wednesday afternoon.
Police have confirmed they were called out to an alleged assault of two men.
Police initially believed a firearm was used in the assault, however the Reporter understands after raiding a block of flats on Muir Road their concerns were dropped as no gun was found.
A West Dunbartonshire Council spokeswoman said as children were preparing to leave the school, staff were alerted that a police presence.
She added: "The head teacher took immediate action and ensured that all children were collected by a parent or other adult and safely escorted away from the school.”
A 29-year-old man was arrested in Stirling Road, Dumbarton for the alleged possession of drugs with intent to supply. The victims of the assault were not seriously injured.
