A CANOE instructor, who watched the final of the Scottish Open Golf Championships while floating on Loch Lomond, paddled away with two prized treasures.
Stewart Mitchell, 26, was hopeful of getting caught by television cameras as he floated close to some of the world’s greatest golfers on the Bonnie Banks last week.
And not only did the Drymen man appear on television on three different occasions, but he also ended up with golf balls thrown to him by the tournament winner and another top pro.
Stewart, who had a smashing view of the seventh, 17th and 18th holes from his watery surroundings, was delighted to go home with golf balls from tournament winner Graeme McDowell and American star Phil Mickelson.
A delighted Stewart, who has taught canoeing on the Bonnie Banks for the past seven summers, told the Reporter it was a perfect day,
He said: “We were next to the seventh hole and McDowell was the first to throw a ball at us.
“When he threw it I didn’t know who he was, it was only when we got home we realised.”
Stewart and his flatmate decided to paddle round to the 17th hole where they had a great view of the fairway as well as the 18th hole.
Despite encouragement from a friend to sell the balls on an internet auctioning site, Stewart has vowed to keep a hold of his treasured possessions.
As a result of his successful day, Stewart’s employers, Can You Experience are now considering offering a canoeing trip for next year’s open whereby golf enthusiasts will be offered “the best seat in the house” to view the event from the water.
