A FAMILY living an ocean apart have been reunited after 21 years.

Duncan Bryden, 48, was introduced to his cousin’s son Alex for the first time when he visited from Vancouver, Canada, to compete in the World Pipe Band Championships.

The family used the occasion to set up a tearful reunion and also fit in a belting performance of Alex’s band — the White Spot Pipe Band — at the HM Naval Base, Helensburgh, where the Bellsmyre man works as a chef.

Duncan and his cousin Margaret, 48, had not seen each in 21 years.

Her parents had emigrated to Canada in the 50s and was the first of her family to be born in the country.

But, Margaret’s family is maintaining its Scottish roots through her 14-year-old son who has signed up as a member of the pipe band.

Duncan told the Reporter he was thrilled to meet his transatlantic family.

He said: “It was great to meet my cousin again. Alex was a wee bit shy at first but he’s a nice boy and it was good for him to see a bit of Scotland and I think all the members of the band had a wonderful experience.”

White Spot Pipe Band finished sixth in its category following its performance at the World Pipe Band Championships, which were held at Glasgow Green on August 16.

Margaret told the Reporter she had a great time in the Burgh and was grateful for the hospitality.

She added: “We were thrilled with the reception we received here.

“Alex and I were thrilled at getting to meet Duncan face-to-face and it was great to come all this way and make so many new friends.”
