ARMED robbers made off with thousands of pounds in cash last night (Monday September 1) after raiding a Vale bank.

The heist took place at the Bank of Scotland on Main Street, Alexandria, between 9.05pm and 9.45pm.

Security guards were refilling the bank's cash machine when three men broke into the branch and stole a cash canister containing a five-figure sum.

The guards, who were uninjured by the incident, were left badly shaken after the robbers threatened them with a blade.

The suspects then made off in an Audi Estate car.

The three men are described as around 5ft 10ins-6ft tall. Two of the suspects were dressed in black and the third was wearing a white t-shirt.

Today, police stood guard outside the branch as officers investigated the incident. A lane opposite the bank was sealed off.

Detective Inspector David Tassie, who is leading the investigation, has asked for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to get in touch.

He said: “I’d like to speak to anyone who was in the Alexandria area and may have seen the suspects hanging around the bank prior to 9.05pm on Monday, or anyone who may have seen any similar type vehicle or a vehicle speeding off at high speed around that time."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Dumbarton police 01389 822000.

Alternatively calls Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
