A TEENAGER caught with a carving knife claimed that he was getting rid of it for someone else, he just could not remember who.

Ross Hemphill, 18, was stopped by cops after they saw that he was “unsteady” on his feet.

And after agreeing to a voluntary search the deadly weapon was discovered, Dumbarton Sheriff Court heard on Thursday.

Gillian Climie, fiscal depute, told the court that at the time Hemphill could offer no explanation to cops for why he had the knife, which had a six inch blade.

She said: “He said that someone had given it to him but could not say who.

“He was asked why he had it and said that apart from trying to get rid of it for someone else he had no reason.”

Hemphill, who has a conviction for a similar offence, had pled guilty to possessing the knife, at a previous court appearance and appeared from custody for sentencing.

He was lifted on Davidson Road, Balloch at around 11.20pm on August 6, this year.

Paul Crozier, defending, said: “[Davidson] has been in custody since this incident occurred.

“He accepts that having taken the item from the other person it was then his responsibility to deal with it straight away by taking it home or to the police — unfortunately he did not.

“Mr Hemphill is realistic about what is going to happen to him for carrying a knife.”

Sentencing, Sheriff Mhairi McTaggart said: “This is a serious matter and the courts take carrying knives extremely seriously.

“You also have a previous conviction for carrying a knife.”

Hemphill, of Davidson Road, Balloch, was sentenced to three months in a young offenders institution.
