HUNDREDS of soldiers returning from Afghanistan will march through the streets of Dumbarton as part of a homecoming parade.
The colourful day will see brave troops from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders proudly march through the town to the accompanying rhythm of bagpipes and beating drums.
Thousands of residents are expected to line the streets in salute to the brave heroes, many from the area, who are currently fighting the Taliban in the volatile Helmand Province.
The ceremonial march on December 11 will be one of only three parades the Argylls will carry out in Scotland after their return.
Captain Stevie Rae
Major Bob Elliot of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders said: “We are probably looking at 450 to 500 soldiers marching — we were given the freedom of Dumbarton and we would like to exercise our rights to march through the town with the colours flying and the drums beating.
“Providing the councillors can facilitate our arrangements, it will be part of our home-coming parades. It is a long time since the Argylls have marched through Dumbarton.
“We are very grateful for the support from the communities of West Dunbartonshire and the surrounding area and the well-wishes the troops have received.”
Families and friends of the many Burgh and Vale soldiers in the regiment are expected to cheer on their loved ones during the day’s festivities.
Marie Connelly from Brucehill, cannot wait to see her son Kieran, who is currently in Afghanistan, march through the town alongside his band of brothers.
She said: “It is really good news and is something to look forward to — it will be very emotional.”
