Dumbarton Academy plans fears

RESIDENTS are feeling “left in the dark” over ambitious plans to build a new Dumbarton Academy.

Although plans are still being drawn up, the community surrounding the secondary believe it is being kept out of the loop regarding proposals to build on its current site.

Two locations have been revealed as potential sites for the development which was removed from the schools regeneration programme last December.

Posties Park in Woodyard Road and the current school site in Crosslet Road, Silverton, are believed to be West Dunbartonshire Council’s (WDC) front runners.

But residents concerned over what this could mean for those living in the streets near to the school, are not being given the chance to be heard, they feel.

One resident who lives near the site, and asked not to be named, felt that the project did not include the views of those living near it.

He told the Reporter: “I’m not sure how the new school is going to affect us, and that’s precisely the point — no one does.

“Nobody has ever got in touch with me to tell me what is happening with the Academy."

A WDC spokesman said: “The council is investigating two possible sites for a new Dumbarton Academy building — the present site on Crosslet Road and Postie’s Park. Both are feasible sites, although both present specific challenges which would require to be overcome.

“No plans have been drawn up as yet and a funding source has not been identified, while planning permission has not been sought, since the preferred site has not been identified.”
