EXTRA cops will be on the beat throughout Dumbarton and the Vale after a cash injection from the council.
As part of a joint initiative between West Dunbartonshire Council (WDC) and Strathclyde Police eight more officers will now be on the streets, which will give the area its highest ever level of policing.
The new bobbies — who have been assigned to the area after a £200,000 cash pledge from the council — will be dedicated to tackling the crime and anti-social behaviour which blights many communities.
The money has been set aside by the council for the next three years and will ensure that the increased police numbers are here to stay.
Iain Robertson, council leader, told the Reporter: “I’m delighted that we have finally been able introduce this and it although it has taken a bit of time, that is only because these are genuine extra recruits, and have not just been redeployed here.”
The council already contributes around £100,000 a year to policing through the anti-social behaviour fund, which is used to deliver overtime and is targeted at specific trouble spots identified by the police.
Superintendent Brian Lennox, deputy divisional commander, said: “The investment by the council will enable the police to further increase the visibility of officers in communities across West Dunbartonshire.
“The community policing teams in the six ward areas will be able to focus on finding solutions to the anti-social behaviour which affects people in their area.”
