FERGUS IS HAPPY TO START
By GARE CLYDE
He could, at this point of time be called, arguably, the only midfielder on the books, and, whatever happens in the coming weeks when he will have company to compete in that position, Fergus is a content 25 year-old who has turned turtle a football career full of promise into a resurrection by coming home and joining his home town team of Dumbarton.
Fergus, a very forthright and realistic guy told me: `I have had disappointments in my football career but right now I am glad to be back in my home town and playing for the Sons.`
He joined Aberdeen from his school desk at Our Lady and St Patrick's on his home patch, and he was a very young and promising player when he joined Alec Miller's squad at Pittodrie Park.
The world was his oyster at that point in the high of his potential football career.
Fergus takes up the story of his gypsy life in the beautiful game.
He said: `I took to Aberdeen and I stayed in the Granite City for six and a half years. After Miller, I served under Ebbe Skovdahl, Steve Paterson and latterly Jimmy Calderwood
`I do not know if it was the changing of managers, people with different ideas and different assessments of players, but eventually I left to join Ross County who were then managed by Alex Smith, a boss I admired, then John Robertson whom I also had a lot of time for.`
He added: `Personally I am very happy to be at Dumbarton and I hope, in the new season, to prove that the gaffer was right to have confidence in me.
`That will not be for the want of trying, for I have gained a new appetite for football and I hope that I can rebuild my career at Dumbarton by being part of a team which will be pressing for promotion.`
I have a very strong feeling that Gerry McCabe made a very shrewd move in bringing Fergus back to the land of the living on the football field. His performances last season were very acceptable and he will build on that.
He is certainly a very buoyant guy and is very ready for a new beginning with Dumbarton.
