GERRY SETS STAGE FOR NEW SEASON

SLOWLY the stage is being set for Dumbarton’s new season of hope starting in August

The new performers are beginning to arrive at the stage door with David McFarlane from Albion Rovers and Brian McPhee from Airdrie United being given roles in what will be a much changed cast from last term.

McPhee is a striker of considerable experience and McFarlane can play up front or in midfield.

Other recruits for the new roles are continually being sought and the next couple of weeks will see more players coming in, certainly after manager Gerry McCabe returns from holiday in Portugal and from his charity match in Cape Town sometime next week.

Six players have left the club with John Dillon being freed and going to Stenhousemuir, Jamie Smith, out of contract, following him to the Warriors, Ryan Borris and Craig Winter moving to Raith Rovers, John Gemmell opting for junior football with Bellshill, and Chris Boyle off to discover football in Australia.

Gaffer Gerry still has spaces to fill in his playing staff, but when I spoke to him before he went off on holiday he felt quite satisfied with the way things were developing.

He is still trying to sell Dumbarton, a third division side, to players who have been playing in the first division.

There will be plenty of disappointment in the manager’s quest for new players and a team building job for promotion.

Most of the players out of contract have signed new deals with the notable exception of goalkeeper Stephen Grindlay who is still to put pen to paper.

He said: `It is so important for us to make the move into the second division at the end of next season.`
