KEEPER LIKELY TO MOVE ON
By GARE CLYDE
THE quest of Stephen Grindlay, the popular Dumbarton goalkeeper, for full-time football seems about to be realised.
He has been offered terms by Queen of the South and he looks odds on to land up at the first division full-time Palmerston club.
Morton had shown an interest in Stephen, and in fact it was reported last week that he had signed for them, but somebody got their wires in a knot over that one.
Morton, Stephen told me, had not contacted him after he had had talks with Ton boss Jim McInally.
New Queen of the South boss Gordon Chisholm moved in smartly at the weekend and it now looks as if Stephen, always the fans favourite at the Rock, will be moving on.
Like many young players at Dumbarton Stephen has been desperate to enter the higher echelon of full-time football in a higher league.
His competent keeping at Dumbarton have earned him recognition, and now the full-time dream is on the verge of reality.
The ball is now firmly in Stephen’s court and if he decides to move on he will go with the best wishes of all at Dumbarton . . . and if he decides to stay put, the barmy army will go berserk.
Stephen, known as Shay because of his early days at Newcastle United with Shay Given, now stands on the threshold of a very important decision for him personally. He is 25 and this could be his last chance to become a full-time footballer.
Manager Gerry McCabe said: “I have been kept informed by Stephen about what is happening.
“He is an up front guy, and I have already made moves to bring in another goalkeeper in anticipation of losing him.`
