KIRKTONHILL WIN SIX IN A ROW

KIRKTONHILL tennis club completed their league fixtures with six straight wins.

They are certain of winning promotion to Division Two and await results from other fixtures to see if they have done enough to take the title.

The penultimate match of the season was at home against league favourites Giffnock 3 and a perfect time to have their best result to date,

All three couples won each of their sets, with Karen Haggarty and Mary Byrne-Leitch impressively taking their sets 6-2, 6-4, 6-1.

As second couple, however, Gwen Irving and Fiona MacDonald didn’t have it all their own way and had a scare in the second set after winning the first 6-1.

A 5-2 lead was allowed to go to a tie-break, but fortunately they held their nerve to take the set and then followed with a final set win of 6-4.

Karen Goodwin and Annette Busby have really come onto their game in recent weeks and produced some fine tennis and to take their sets 7-6,6-3.6-3 and make the final score 9-0 to Kirktonhill.

In their final match, the team had home advantage against Bearsden 2, knowing that a win was vital if they were to secure promotion.

True to form, Karen and Mary cruised past their opponents with one of their most confident performances.

Gwen and Fiona were equally quick to take control of their match and ended their first season on court together with a commanding 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 win.

But it was a different story for Karen and Annette who, despite some tenacious play, just couldn’t break down a very strong Bearsden couple and lost 2-6, 5-7, 3-6 — final score: 6-3 to Kirktonhill.
