GREENOCK 3 VALE OF LEVEN 1
By Dumbarton Reporter Sport
A COMBINATION of defensive errors and missed chances cost Vale dearly in this final sectional cup match at Ravenscraig.
The Millburn men only had themselves to blame for this 3-1 defeat.
Vale were without key players Toby King, Dougie Wilson, Iain Crawford, Alan Gourlay, Alex Drain and David Grant as boss Hugh Hamill rang the changes to give everyone a chance to stake a claim for a place in the starting eleven in next week’s league opener at Cambuslang.
It was the home side that took the lead after just 15 minutes when Vale conceded a corner, from which former Dumbarton man, Alan Barnes, scored. After Vale passed up countless opportunities to level the score they eventually equalised after 65 minutes when Steven O’Meara netted his first goal for Vale when he placed a low shot into the net after a neat build up.
There was little between the sides but Greenock took the lead with three minutes remaining.
Hugh Hamill’s men gave away a free kick just outside the area and former Vale defender Ross Gallacher stepped up to curl the free kick high into the net.
They then missed two golden opportunities to equalise through Montague, but in the closing seconds Barnes added his second of the afternoon to secure the win.
Vale — Matthew Carr, Graeme McKenzie, Alex Lacy, Robert McKenzie, Paul Ross, Kevin Montague, Jack Buchanan, Alan Filshie, Gordon Martin, Hugh Ward (Alan Ferguson 65), Steven O’Meara (Craig Wotherspoon 78). Unused Subs Iain Crawford, trialist & Mark O’Donnell.
Meanwhile, the under-21s had a 4-0 win away at Linwood Rangers in the West of Scotland Youth League with Mark Pawsey grabbing a hat trick to add to Kenny Wilson’s header. This week they are at home to Dumbarton Harp, kick off 2pm.
