DUMBARTON & STRATHCYDE UNITED PENALTY WIN
A LARGE crowd were treated to a thriller at Merkins Park last Tuesday.
Barca took the lead inside 10 seconds when a short pass-back was slowed down by the long grass and United were a goal down — with the council being blamed by some fans for not cutting the grass.
United were creating chance after chance but could not score but they finally got their reward early in the second half, although they had already found the net.
On two occasions they looked to have scored, with United fans and officials claiming the ball was over the line in both incidents, but the referee played on both times.
The breakthrough came when Law pressurised the Barcalomond defender into a mistake before also deceiving the keeper to make it 1-1 and force the match into extra time.
Keeper Docherty emerged as the hero, after there were no further goals and the match went to a penalty decider, when he saved two spot-kicks.
Meanwhile Law, Macdonald and McLeod all converted to give United the Amie Sweeney Memorial Cup for the second season in a row.
United — Docherty, Macdonald, McCollum, Ramsay, Ward, Lacon, Brannagan, Diamond, Shelvey, Law, Mitchell.
