TAG ALONG FOR RUGBY TRAINING
ACTIVE Schools Coordinator Martin Caldwell and Helensburgh Rugby Club Community Coach Sam Lawrie have recently introduced tag rugby in schools.
Tag rugby is a fast-moving, minimum-contact game suitable for boys and girls to play together and its safe, limited-contact nature, combined with the fun and vibrancy of the sport makes it an ideal introduction to the sport of rugby.
Teams from five primary schools recently competed for the Active Schools Tag Rugby cup for the first time, hosted by Cardross Primary.
During the game a tag belt is worn around the waist with two ribbons (tags) attached by Velcro.
One tag hangs down each side with the belt worn on the outside of the clothing and are positioned with one on each hip.
A tackle is made when a member of the opposition manages to tear a Velcro Tag from their opponent.
Throughout the exciting tournament some fantastic rugby was played.
Some great tries were scored and the children were able to put into practice the skills they had learned during a five-week input from Sam Lawrie who visited the various schools.
In a keenly fought final Rhu Primary emerged victorious beating Colgrain to claim the trophy.
Work is currently underway to target all schools with the intention of hosting an even bigger event next year.
Mini and Midi rugby training takes place at Helensburgh Rugby Club on a Saturday morning between 10am and 11:30am — for further details contact William Mair on 01436 670952.
