STRIKER BACK IN FULL-TIME FOOTBALL
FORMER Dumbarton prolific striker Iain Russell’s soccer world is firmly floating on cloud nine this week following to first division newcomers Morton.
Iain - known to his mates as Beanie - paid Brechin City £40,000 on the last day of the transfer window.
It constituted a bright and bountiful new beginning for the 27 year-old who burst the popularity polls ratings at the Strathclyde Homes Stadium before leaving.
When I spoke to Iain this week, he could not contain his pleasure that, once again, he had won a full-time job in football.
Iain told me: “When I was full-time with Motherwell following my stint as a youth with Rangers, the Fir Park club went into administration and I found myself a victim of the vast cost cutting exercise which followed.
“That devastated me. I was shattered. It was as if the world had ended and the roof had fallen in on all my ambitions in the game.”
Brian Fairley, then boss of the Sons, persuaded him to join his crew down at the Rock and gave him the opportunity of turning around his career in the game.
“I will always be grateful for that,” he said.
“I really enjoyed my time at Dumbarton and working under Brian, and what made it easier for me to put my feet back on the ground and start all over again was the club, my team-mates, and the fans who encouraged me so much.`
