VALE FRUSTRATED AS BACKLOG BUILDS
By David Christie
VALE boss Hugh Hamill reckons only a deep freeze can stop his players returning to league action on Saturday.
The gaffer was left disappointed again at the weekend after the match with Thorniewood United was postponed as a result of the weather.
And while he accepts relegation brought with it journeys to grounds more susceptible to bad weather, Hamill is desperate for the next home game with Millburn Park in top condition.
He said: “The fact we have to go to these types of grounds is our own making, and I am not being
disrespectful to other teams in the league, but I just want us to get promotion as soon as we can.
“One week is fine, two weeks is frustrating, but if it goes beyond this I will start to get really ticked off.
“When things are going badly and you have injuries then games being called off are welcome but that isn’t the case for us. I just want to get it done and dusted as quickly as possible.
“It is made worse by the fact that, in Millburn Park, we have one of the best parks going — it is in perfect
condition but it is sitting unused while our away games are called off.”
Despite only managing seven league fixtures thus far, the Vale sit top of the league, a pleasing sight with several new faces having joined the squad in the Summer.
He added: “The team we had before was a good lot but were maybe kept together a season too long.
“We’ve done ok so far this year, with a few fresh faces.
“The players just want to play, that’s what it is all about. We’ve managed to get a few games in Alexandria and down at the astro-turf pitch in Helensburgh but it is not the same.
“We played a bounce game against Harp Amateurs just to keep the guys ticking over but it doesn’t match up with a competitive fixture”.
Next up, barring postponement, are Forth Wanderers FC at Millburn Park this Saturday at 1.45pm.
The Wanderers trail Vale by six points having played a game more and Hammill is insistent the show must go on.
Hamill said: “Unless there is a deep freeze the game will go ahead this weekend.
“It is strange we have gone top of the league without even playing — Cambuslang, Carluke and Greenock have all dropped points. If anything, without playing we have strengthened our position.
“Everyone is looking forward to Christmas and a wee break but I just want continuity.
“It is about getting the balance between having a good time and keeping everyone on the ball.”
