RETURN: Alan Brown

VALE boss Hugh Hamill has bolstered his midfield after Alan Brown made a surprise return to his hometown club.

Brown, who Hamill has worked with from juvenile level, switched from Vale of Leven to Renfrew for a crack at the Stagecoach Premier Division.

But the move fell flat for the hard working Brown, with first team chances at a premium.

Frew were relegated at the end of last season and Brown was delighted to be reunited with his former club.

Hamill said: “I’ve worked with Alan for a long number of years and I know he struggled a wee bit at Renfrew. He wasn’t enjoying it and at this level that is so important - it’s not as if the players do it for the money.

“He was right to go and have a try as if you don’t try then you’ll never know. Now he is back where he feels he belongs and hopefully he’ll enjoy the game again.”

Brown, who was a pupil at Vale of Leven Academy, was in the Renfrew side when the two teams clashed in the Sectional League Cup in August and Hamill knows exactly what he will bring to the team.

“He is a good player and he is a Vale boy too,” added Hamill. “He has a good range of passing which could be very important for us in the run in and he is now in his mid 20s so he comes back to the club at the right age with more experience.

“I just felt the squad in general needed bolstering. Ideally I would like a striker but so would every other club out there.”

New signing Brown is likely to start against Carluke on Saturday, but will not play the full match until he builds up his fitness.

Goalkeeper Matt Carr is struggling with a strained muscle in his arm, while Alan Filshie missed the bounce game due to shin splints.

Striker Dougie Wilson hurt his knee but should be back in contention for a start in this must win game at Millburn.
