GOAL: Michael Moore

Elgin City 2 Dumbarton 1

DUMBARTON’S recent run of good results came to an end at a sun-kissed Borough Briggs on Saturday as Elgin City snatched a 2-1 win.

In an evenly matched first half, a classy finish from Ross O’Donoghue separated the sides.

In a first half of few chances for either side, the first five minutes saw Andy Geggan put a shot wide of the post, and David Crawford had to be at his best to tip over a long range effort from City.

On the 16 minutes mark, O’Donoghue curled a free kick around the wall and a combination of Crawford and the post kept the ball out.

Craig Brittain was booked for a foul on 22 minutes and this may have contributed to City’s opener four minutes later.

Brittain was beaten by a flowing move down the right and Zander Sutherland’s pass found O’Donoghue outside the box.

His powerful shot, which looked to be going just over, beat Crawford’s outstretched hand and dipped just under the bar for a memorable opener.

Until that point, the first half had been an even affair, but the goal spurred Sons into action with a much better final ten minutes.

Unlike the early exchanges of the first half, Sons opened the second with all guns blazing, creating a series of good opportunities.

Unfortunately, they were unable to capitilise on any of them, a failing that was to cost them the game.

Ryan Russell then picked up a booking for a late tackle as Sons kept up the pressure on the Elgin goal.

On the hour mark, Mark Canning had a shot from the edge of the box pushed on to the post by the keeper.

Jim Chapman then threw on Tommy Coyne as a replacement for Axel Orrstrom as Sons pressed for the equaliser, and it came two minutes later.

Brilliant work on the right by Chris Hamilton saw him beat Alan Dempsie.

Bravery

He cut inside the full back and floated a cross to the far post where Michael Moore showed great bravery in launching himself at the ball, finding the net with his header and the post with most of his body.

At that point, the money would have been on Sons to capitilise on their good play, but City were back in front in under 60 seconds.

Sons let their concentration lapse for a moment and Sutherland was able to send in a low cross from the right, which Darren Shallicker knocked in from close range.
