WIN: Vale are back on top

BOUNCEBACKABILTY take a bow — the shooting boots were on as Vale returned to the top of the league.

Manager Hugh Hamill had bemoaned his side’s failure in front of goal but strikes from Jack Buchanan, Dougie Wilson and Kevin Montague coupled with a clean sheet have certainly cheered him up.

An elated Hamill said: “I’m really pleased two forwards were on the scoresheet. Carluke at home was always going to be the one we wanted to win badly. In recent home matches we’ve played quite well but shot ourselves in the foot.

“I said at half-time, wait and see the difference when you score the second goal — it makes a big psychological difference — and that proved to be the case on Saturday.”

Buchanan put Vale ahead in the 13th minute with a wonder volley. Hugh Ward backheeled the ball to Gordon Martin whose cross was blocked. As the ball spun into the air, Buchanan was alert to lash home from the edge of the box.

Keeper Matt Carr had several saves to keep the slender advantage, while at the other end, Hugh Ward shot tamely when put clean through on goal.

Vale then had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside before Wilson gave his side a deserved two goal cushion in 62 minutes. The goal, though somewhat fortuitous, ricocheting off the advancing keeper and back off Wilson, was most welcome as it trundled over the line.

Wilson, who made an immediate impact from the bench, was then forced off following a collision with the Rovers keeper.

With just over 10 minutes left, Kevin Montague sealed victory after he cut in from the right and fired low into the far corner.

There are no games pencilled in for Easter weekend but Hamill is hopeful of arranging a friendly with Beith for next Tuesday.
