BRAVE SHOW FROM SONS
East Fife 2 Dumbarton 1
IN WEATHER that made a mockery of calls for summer football, Sons were unlucky to lose out to runaway league winners East Fife.
For much of an even first half, the game was played in driving hail, but as conditions improved in the second 45, the Sons dominated long periods of the game.
For much of the first half, in conditions that had most fans scurrying to the back of the stand, a midfield battle saw few chances and little action for either goalkeeper.
The only significant attempt on goal in the first half hour was a Tommy Coyne free kick from 20-yards that flew well wide and it was only in the final 15 minutes of the first half that the game burst into life.
Five minutes from halftime, East Fife produced their first real chance of the game when Paul McManus beat the offside flag and ran though on goal.
However, as he was about to shoot, both Lennon and O’Byrne got back to block his effort.
The Sons’ defence did not heed this warning, as the Fifers took the lead in controversial circumstances two minutes later.
After a scramble in the Sons’ area, a shot from McManus rebounded off the base of the post and was knocked home by Chris Templeman from what looked to be an offside position in front of goal.
The second half kicked off with much improved weather, and it was the Sons who continued to produce the best chances.
As with the first half, this period of Dumbarton pressure was followed by a goal from the home side.
On the hour mark, the Fifers were awarded a corner on the right and left back Dougie Cameron took full advantage of the wind by swinging the corner straight into the net.
Five minutes later, Sons were back in the game thanks to sparkling work by Geggan and Tiernan.
From inside the box, Geggan squared the ball along the six-yard line, and Tiernan hammered the ball home from an acute angle at the far post.
Liam Cusack was outstanding out on the wing, and sub Kieran Brannan, in only his fourth outing, was unlucky not to provide an equaliser.
