BADMINTON: Steven Stewart

BONHILL badminton ace Steven Stewart is among the favourites for a major title at the Bank of Scotland National Junior Badminton Championships this weekend (April 12-13).

The 16-year-old former Vale of Leven Academy student is the second seed in the boys’ singles under-17 category.

Steven, pictured, is also seeded in the boys’ doubles and mixed doubles tournaments when he takes to the court.

He told Sportscene: “I’ve been doing well so far this year so I was hoping for a high seeding.”

Steven now attends the prestigious Glasgow School of Sport and, under the stewardship of high performance coach Craig Robertson, the Vale hotshot has his eyes on the singles title vacated by Edinburgh’s Martin Campbell, who moves up an age level.

Steven has already won the east and west of Scotland titles this year.

He is planning an attack on all fronts in the championships at Edinburgh’s Meadowbank Sports Centre when he plays in the championship this weekend.

The talented teen, who made the national badminton team this year, added: “Ideally I think I can take the singles title and I’m hopeful of going far in the doubles and mixed doubles.”

It will be the first time that Steven has competed in the under-17 age category, having previously entered at under-13 level.
