RUNNER'S MARATHON WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT
By Andrew Gibson
MARATHON MAN: Gavin
A LONG DISTANCE runner from the Burgh has broken the world treadmill marathon record before running the London Marathon a few hours later.
Gavin Harvie, 37, was part of a team of 12 runners who ran 495.76 miles in 48 hours before stepping off the treadmill and onto the streets to take part in the 26-mile Flora London Marathon.
The world treadmill record attempt took place in Lillywhites sports shop window in Piccadilly, London, and finished just hours before thousands of runners lined up to pound the city in one of the world’s biggest marathons on Sunday.
The long distance runners — who took shifts on the treadmill — smashed the previous record of 431 miles and raised money for Tommy’s — a charity dedicated to researching the causes of miscarriage, still birth and premature birth.
Gavin, originally from Dumbarton but now living in Glasgow, ran 42.5 miles on the treadmill and then completed the London marathon in three hours and 17 minutes.
He told the Reporter it was his biggest challenge yet.
Gavin, pictured, said: “Doing this was sheer madness to be honest.
“The treadmill was really tough — It got very hot and humid quite quickly.
“The support from the public was brilliant, there were crowds of people looking in the window giving us support.”
Gavin — a seasoned sportsman — said running the London marathon was all about survival of the fittest.
