LOSS: Vale lost out in the cup

Vale of Leven 2 Vale of Clyde 3

ARELESS errors gifted Vale of Clyde the win in a five goal thriller at Millburn Park.

Despite the divisional gap there was little to separate these two sides and Vale of Leven can consider themselves very unlucky not to have emerged with at least honours even.

A goal ahead after 35 minutes through Alan Filshie, it was looking good for the home side, but Clyde soon equalised and were able to progress to round three thanks to a gift of a penalty.

Ten minutes before half-time, Alan Filshie burst into the box and put the home side ahead. More renowned for his headers, Filshie colly slotted home from 12 yards.

But the lead lasted just five minutes as a free kick, conceded by the goalscorer for shirt pulling, allowed Clyde to equalise with a powerful header.

In the second half, the Millburn men again started the stronger and looked to press home their advantage but instead it was Clyde who took the lead for the first time in the match.

Thomas Sinclair capitalised on a cross from the striker and knocked home the rebound after Matthew Carr had denied Paul McLaughlin.

Then came the moment of madness which gave Clyde an unassailable lead.

David Grant was caught out by Sinclair as he attempted to shepherd the ball behind for a bye kick and Robert McKenzie sent him crashing to the floor giving the referee little option but to point to the spot.

In a rare appearance, former Dumbarton Academy FP player Alan Ferguson reduced the arrears but, as the clock ticked by, Vale could not find the equaliser their dominance merited and the cup slipped away.
