Spiders on song in semi-final showdown
Queen's Park 2 St Patrick's FP 1
THE Saints found Spiders’ keeper Alex Cowie in top form as they tried in vain to recover from an early setback.
Behind just four minutes in when Barry Douglas squeezed the ball home from a corner, it was always going to be tough.
But McGrogan tormented the Spiders and should have won a penalty when he was dunted in the box. Just before the break, a terrific shot from Thomas Smith was equalled with a save from Cowie in the Spiders’ goal which drew loud applause.
After sloppy play from both sides, Alan Galloway set up Ruane on 60 minutes but he found Cowie still in inspired form, grasping the ball as it headed for the net.
David Torrance put the Spiders two ahead with a wonderful swerving shot which went in off the keeper’s left hand post after he was allowed to run from deep.
Injuries to Bell and McGrogan further dented Saints hopes but they kept plugging away. A Smith free kick shaved the bar then Thomas fired in a vicious shot which was turned to safety. Mathew Bissett added to the trio of chances before Cowie cleared with his left foot.
In injury time, Martin Currie gave St Pat’s consolation with a powerful header from a corner but the party was over for another year.
Back to league business just two days later, St Pat’s recorded a good away win over Cambria with goals from Chris Docherty and D’annunzio. On Saturday, a decisive 4-1 victory at home against Duncanrig, with a double from Mathew Bissett and goals from Dom Ruane and D’annunzio keep the team in contention for the league championship.
St Pat’s now have five difficult away games in the league plus a cup semi-final in the next ten days and a possible Division Championship for the second team.
