SONS captain Gordon Lennon chose to spend his summer holidays relaxing in Airdrie.

No, the versatile defender has not lost his marbles — he was in fact away sunning himself in Airdrie, Canada.

And while the weather was great, Lennon admits he spent much of his time inside sat staring at a computer as he looked up the Dumbarton website for the latest club news.

He said: “I’ve been keeping up to date with what’s been happening at the club and all the comings and goings, well more comings than goings really.

“I’ve been checking out the website regularly and it’s made interesting reading.

“There is now easily a handful of boys who, when you look at their quality, should be playing at a higher level.

"It’s vital we utilise them the best we can as the January transfer window can be a cruel window if you are doing well.

“Clubs above us could sign them and we’d struggle so it’s vital we make the most of them while they’re here.”

Lennon was a first-choice for manager Jim Chapman after his move from Partick Thistle in January but admitted he was scared of losing his first-team place .

Lennon said: “When I came back from Canada I was under no illusions that I’d walk back into the team.

“I knew the boys would be fitter and sharper and I’d have to wait my turn."

The ex-Albion Rovers defender looked assured in the closing stages against Morton, winning his share of headers and striding forward comfortably with the ball at his feet. He is hopeful of a similar performance as the challenge steps up with two SPL teams visiting the Strathclyde Homes Stadium, starting tonight against St Mirren then Hamilton tomorrow (Wednesday) .

Lennon said: “No matter the results we’ll be ready for action. For me the season can’t come quickly enough.”
