DUMBARTON goal hero Fergus Tiernan was delighted to score the winner in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Berwick, but admits just playing in the first team is a bonus.

The Helensburgh-born midfielder was far from a regular fixture in the team last season, playing 22 league games, and manager Jim Chapman indicated he would have to play for his place this term.

Tiernan, 26, said: “It was a good game to win on Saturday and I’m happy that I got the winning goal, but getting a game and playing regularly is what I want to do.

“The gameplan that the gaffer laid out for us for Berwick worked well, but the loss of what was a daft goal set us back a wee bit. But credit to the lads for digging in and getting the result.”

Ex-Aberdeen man Tiernan revealed that he was playing through the pain barrier on Saturday as his troublesome ankle is not quite 100 per cent.

He said: “I’ll need a wee bit of physio on it but I should be ok and I don’t want to lose my place in the team.”

Looking forward to the next set of matches at Strathclyde Homes Stadium, the midfielder said: “With two home games coming up it gives everyone a chance to build on our start to the season.

“And for the fans too it’ll be a welcome break from travelling after two long hauls to Elgin and Berwick.”
