DUMBARTON  captain Gordon Lennon reckons the stuttering start to the season means a win is a must against his former club.

Six points from a possible 15 has left the Sons slumped in seventh position — trailing league leaders Stenhousemuir by five.

And Lennon, who started his senior career at Albion Rovers, feels the poor start has upped the ante on his return to Cliftonhill.

He told Sport Scene: “I am looking forward to it, but all emotional attachment I have for Rovers ends when I step out on the pitch.

“Cliftonhill has now become a place I feel three points are crucial rather than just ‘we will take what we can’.”

Lennon won Rovers’ Player of the Year in his second season before an ill-fated move to join Partick Thistle.

But he will not be fearing a return to his old stomping ground, having already run out against Rovers for three different clubs.

The outcome has been mixed — a 2-0 pre-season win with the Jags, then a 3-3 draw when on loan to Stenhousemuir followed by a 1-0 defeat in the gold of Dumbarton.

Still, the Sons captain knows exactly what awaits his team on Saturday.

He added: “I am under no illusions they are not just a blood, sweat and tears team — they are a footballing side.

“The club was good for me and I appreciate that, but now I am going there to do a job for Dumbarton.”

Lennon, 25, is champing at the bit to get back into action following the international break.

And he feels his team-mates need to learn the harsh lessons from their poor start as quickly as possible.
