Loch Lomond in action

LOCH Lomond maintained their good start to the season and kept in touch with the league leaders thanks to a comprehensive 10-try victory over the Ayrshire outfit.

After last weekend’s postponement, Lomond were anxious for a return to winning ways over a team struggling at the wrong end of the table.

Following a poignant minute’s silence, Urquhart knocked on from kick-off. And the visitors maintained early pressure but were unable to make it count.

They were soon on the back foot as they struggled to cope with some strong running and rucking from the Loch Lomond forwards.

It was not long before Lomond scored their first try.

Scrum half Craig Norrie quickly tapped a penalty while the defence were asleep. He plunged over with ease in at the corner, with Nicholson adding the conversion.

Lomond were playing some good rugby which was illustrated in the second try. Ian Norrie burst through the middle, off-loaded before the tackle to fellow front row Urquhart. He drew his man before returning the ball to Norrie who trundled over the line with defenders hanging off him. The conversion was missed.

Cumnock began to enjoy a little more possession, but turned the ball over too easily and Lomond took advantage. Mathieson scored his side’s third try after good work from the Norrie brothers.

And before half-time, Craig Norrie scored his second and Lomond’s fourth with a bamboozling run through would-be tacklers, converted by Nicholson.

Home coach Iain Ross was happy at half-time as the four try bonus point had already been secured, but warned Lomond to be more ruthless in possession.

To that end, he instructed a more expansive game plan to get the ball wide at every opportunity, stretching the defence and opening up gaps for exploitation.

Nicholson soon benefited as he touched down to round off a flowing move including good work from the forwards.

Lomond kept the work rate up and Craig scored his third after breaking down the blindside from a maul. McAdam then converted.

The back row of Todd, Ferrier and M Flynn were outstanding for Lomond.

Both Ferrier and Flynn got in on the try scoring act after cutting space through the Cumnock defence.

Not long after, Mathieson scored his second with a strong run through the back division which McAdam converted.

Jonny Urquhart rounded off the scoring for Lomond, flopping over the line from close range.

Cumnock scored with a penalty late on, but it could not put the dampener on a deserved victory against a team they struggled to beat last season.

Lomond’s forwards were the more cohesive and the line-out continued to function well, while the forwards also took a number of balls against the head in the scrum.

Throughout the team, support play and handling was good in tough conditions.

Next week the First XI travel across to Stranraer to face Wigtownshire.

Lomond: Urquhart, Dennison, I Norrie, Turner, McGinty, Todd, Ferrier, Flynn, C Norrie, McAdam, Thomson, Nicholson, Mathieson, Mallia, A Flynn. Subs: Tilly, S Flynn, Law.
