A “precious” piece of First World War history, which gives an account of where and when school pupils were killed in battle, has been discovered.
Catriona Robertson, head teacher at Vale of Leven Academy, was shocked to discover a small logbook containing the names of 64 former pupils and staff killed during the Great War.
The logbook, written in 1919 by former Vale head teacher Duncan McIntyre, was discovered amongst other documents which had been moved following the demolition of the old school building.
Names of soldiers, their age and where and how they were killed are poignantly recorded.
As well as the logbook, a jotter containing the minutes of meetings conducted by the Vale of Leven War Memorial Committee in 1919 was also found.
A war memorial, which is on display in the school, matches precisely the names of the former pupils noted in the logbook.
Newspaper clippings from 1919, as well as a memorial committee donation sheet, were also part of the discovery."
